Roy "Loudin" Fleming Obituary

Roy “Loudin” Fleming, 92, of Wallace, passed on to his Heavenly Father on October 31, 2019, at the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg.  He was born April 2, 1927, in Wallace, the son of the late Oris W. “Jake” and Mabel (Ashcraft) Fleming.

Loudin is survived by his wife of 28 years, Joann (Goldsmith) Fleming; one son, Fritz Benker and his wife, Erika; and two granddaughters, Tina and Jasmine, all of Germany; two sisters, Doris Jean Goshen of Waldorf, MD, and Ruth Chase of Suitland, MD; two sister-in-laws, Helen Anderson and her husband Jim, of Burgettstown, PA, and Florence Fleming of Mt. Claire, WV, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his parents, Loudin was preceded in death by two brothers, Vaughn and Larry Fleming; and three sisters, Jewell Fleming, Bernice Adams and Marie White.

Loudin graduated from the Wallace High Class of 1945.  He also played baseball for the Lumberport Lions teams that won the Harrison County League Baseball Championship in 1945 and 1947.  Loudin was both an excellent hitter, which he held the best batting average for, and pitcher, which he held the most strike-outs for that league.  It led Loudin to be offered, but declined an invitation from the Pittsburgh Pirates to attend a tryout for the team.

After proudly serving for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, including a year overseas in Germany, he worked as an auto mechanic for PK Alkaires and Harry Green Chevrolet.  Loudin was a highly skilled mechanic who could repair anything, eventually retiring as a maintenance supervisor from Kopal Towers in Clarksburg.

One of Loudin’s greatest passions was “coon hunting” with family and friends, but especially with his dad, Jake, and any kid that wanted to join a hunt.  Loudin lived a long, wonderful life and will be greatly missed by many.

The family will receive friends at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 South Pike Street, Shinnston, WV 26431, on Monday, November 4, 2019 from 2:00-8:00PM and again on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 from 11:00AM until the time of service at 1:00PM with Pastor Keith Swiger officiating.  Interment will follow at the Wallace Lion’s Cemetery on Ten Mile Road in Wallace, WV where he will receive full military honors.
