Mary Hawkins Obituary

Mary Hawkins, 78, of Hurricane, formerly of Enterprise, passed peacefully on to her heavenly home on February 3, 2022 with family by her side, following an extended illness.  Mary was born on April 29, 1943 in Enterprise, the daughter of the late Lloyd Howard and Wanda Russell McIntire.

Mary was married to Richard Hawkins on August 27, 1960 and they remained happily married for 55 years until his passing on October 17, 2015.  Mary will be sadly missed by her two children Rob Hawkins and wife Holly of Shinnston and Tami Powell and husband Darren of Hurricane.  She is also survived by five grandchildren who adored their Mammaw, Kirk Powell and wife KayLee of Scott Depot, Evan Powell and wife Alyssa of Sissonville, Haley Lucey and husband Nathaniel of Monroe, MI, Mackenzie Hawkins and Payton Hawkins, both of Shinnston.  She also leaves behind her five great grandchildren who brought her so much joy in her final years, Saylor, Lincoln, and Vander Powell, Piper Stevens, and Gwendolyn Powell.

She is also survived by her two brothers, Lloyd “Sonny” McIntire and wife Joan of Fairmont, Stanley McIntire of Shinnston, and her sister Ruth Ann Miller of Northville, MI as well as several nieces and nephews, including a special niece Callie Traugh who she spent much time with in her later years.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters Betty Hawkins and Irene Johnson Harbert.

Mrs. Hawkins spent most of her life as a homemaker and earned a reputation as a great cook and baker.  She used her talents whenever she could to help others, whether it was as a home room mother at Enterprise Grade School, church dinners or fundraisers at Enterprise United Methodist, Family Life Fellowship, or Jewel City Church, providing funeral dinners for friends and families or helping out those less fortunate, Mary was very giving of her time and talents.  She loved hosting family gatherings for the extended family at her home and as her immediate family grew, she hosted family dinners on Sunday and regardless of the occasion, no one ever left hungry.

As a baker, it was Christmas season that she truly loved.  She would annually bake hundreds of dozens of cookies and distribute them to friends and family.  Even those who offered to buy cookies were either undercharged or not charged at all.  Mary would rather use her talents to make people happy than for personal gain.

Mary was very strong in her faith and looked forward reuniting with her parents and her husband Richard, whom she missed greatly.

Friends and family will be received at Dorsey Funeral Home, 701 S. Pike St., Shinnston on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 from 3:00pm to 8:00pm.  Service will be on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 11:00am with her son-in-law, Pastor Darren Powell officiating.  Burial to follow at Enterprise IOOF Cemetery.
